In Singapore, the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) is a significant milestone for Primary 6 students heading for secondary schooling. Among the core subjects tested, Mandarin is crucial for students who take it as their Mother Tongue Language (MTL).

The PSLE Mandarin exam evaluates a student’s ability in reading comprehension, writing, listening, and oral communication, making it an essential factor in their overall academic performance.

However, many students struggle with different aspects of the exam — mastering the tones in spoken Mandarin, structuring their compositions effectively, or tackling comprehension questions with confidence.

How MandarinStars Prepares Students for PSLE Mandarin Success

At MandarinStars, we understand that the PSLE exam can be challenging, especially for students who may not speak Mandarin at home. Our Primary 6 Foundation Class focuses on developing specific exam-based skills required for the Primary 6 Foundation Level.

Through a structured and engaging learning approach, we help students build confidence, improve accuracy, and successfully develop effective exam techniques to tackle the PSLE paper. Here’s how we prepare our students for each section of the exam.

1. Strengthening Listening Comprehension and Oracy Skills

Many students feel nervous about the PSLE Oral Exam, especially when they must respond to video-based stimulus questions. Speaking, structuring responses effectively, and pronouncing words are essential skills that require practice.

During Mandarin classes for Primary six students, our instructors combine structured oral practice, video-based exercises, and listening comprehension drills to help students build confidence and fluency in their speech.

Simulating PSLE oral examination conditions students to perform in unfamiliar or stressful conditions. At the same time, it helps them organise their thoughts and better articulate their responses to get better results.

Additionally, targeted pronunciation and intonation training ensures students speak naturally and accurately, improving their communication skills. This exam-focused and interactive approach confidently prepares students to perform well in the PSLE Mandarin oral and listening comprehension components.

2. Expanding Vocabulary and Language Use

Reading comprehension and writing composition are major aspects of the PSLE Mandarin exam. This is why MandarinStars places a special emphasis on building up our students’ vocabulary during Mandarin classes.

Often, students struggle to remember new words, recognise certain Chinese characters, and use said words in sentences, which causes them to have trouble expressing themselves in written and spoken Mandarin.

Students face these challenges because Mandarin has a character-based writing system, which differs significantly from English or phonetic languages. Mandarin requires visual memory and recall, unlike alphabet-based languages, where words can be sounded out. This can make it challenging for those not regularly exposed to the language, i.e., students who periodically speak English at home.

Also, Chinese characters tend to have similar structures or meanings, which makes it harder for students to differentiate between them. Without proper teaching strategies, students may mix words, forget stroke orders, or struggle to apply them in different contexts.

Having identified this challenge, Mandarin Stars’ instructors make use of several proven learning techniques to make Mandarin classes more enjoyable for kids, such as:

  • Radical-Based Learning — Breaking characters into smaller radicals helps students understand structure and meaning. We highlight and colour-code radicals, making recognition easier.
  • Visual Associations & Storytelling — Associating characters with images and short stories enhance memorisation. For example, students remember 拳 by linking it to the phrase “男生挥手打了我一拳” (The boy waved his hand and punched me).
  • Differentiated Worksheets — Customised worksheets provide step-by-step guidance, allowing students to progress at their own pace while building confidence.
  • Individualised Support — Teachers adjust the learning pace and difficulty based on each student’s ability, ensuring lessons remain challenging yet achievable.

In addition to learning strategies, we focus on PSLE-relevant vocabulary, ensuring that students are familiar with commonly tested words and phrases. This approach ensures that they can recognise and use key vocabulary effectively in written compositions and during the oral exam.

3. Developing Strong Reading Comprehension Skills

Reading comprehension is one of the most challenging aspects of the Mandarin learning journey, and the PSLE Mandarin exam is no exception. During the exam, students are required to read and interpret complex passages and answer comprehension questions accurately.

This can be highly challenging for many students, given the stress of an unfamiliar environment, improper reading techniques, and time constraints. Unlike English, Mandarin is a character-based language, which means students cannot rely on phonetics to sound out unfamiliar words.

If students do not recognise a character, they may struggle to understand the meaning of an entire sentence or passage. Word recognition and vocabulary knowledge are critical for comprehension.

At MandarinStars, we equip students with the right techniques and strategies to tackle reading comprehension questions confidently:

  • Explicit Teaching of Reading Strategies — Students learn to analyse narrative and visual texts, identify key ideas, and extract relevant information efficiently.
  • Answering Techniques for Different Question Types — We train students to break down questions, spot keywords, and structure responses clearly, ensuring they meet PSLE examiners’ expectations.
  • Practice with Past PSLE-Style Questions — Exposure to PSLE-format comprehension exercises helps students refine their time management and answering accuracy under exam conditions.

By mastering these comprehension techniques, students learn to read critically, interpret information effectively, and answer clearly, improving their PSLE performance.

4. Enhancing Writing and Sentence Structure Mastery

Finally, we come to writing and sentence composition. During this phase of the Mandarin PSLE exams, students can choose between scenario- or picture-based essays.

A common pitfall faced by students is difficulties structuring their essays, using appropriate vocabulary, and applying correct grammar and sentence structures. Some may struggle with putting their ideas on paper, while others find it challenging to write accurate characters in their essays.

Compounding this is the lack of familiarity and stress, which can negatively affect a student’s performance. For example, they may second-guess their sentence structures, forget key vocabulary or struggle to recall the correct stroke order for characters. Under exam pressure, even students who are proficient in Mandarin may find it difficult to organise their thoughts coherently and translate them into well-structured essays

To provide students with a strong base in writing, MandarinStars implements the following strategies:

  • Guided Sentence Structure Practice — We train students to construct grammatically correct and well-formed Mandarin sentences, avoiding common errors.
  • Step-by-Step Composition Writing Techniques — Students learn how to plan and structure their essays, ensuring logical progression and clarity.
  • Exam-Specific Composition Practice — We provide students with PSLE-style composition prompts, allowing them to practice under exam conditions and refine their skills with teacher feedback.
  • Use of Descriptive Language and Transitions — Students are taught how to integrate good phrases, connectors, and expressive language, helping them craft well-written, high-scoring essays.

Giving Every Child the Best Chance to Succeed in PSLE Mandarin Examinations

Every parent wants their child to excel in the PSLE exams, as it plays a crucial role in their academic journey. However, not all children learn at the same pace, and factors such as learning difficulties, lack of exposure to Mandarin, or exam anxiety can impact their performance.

Students with special learning needs, such as dyslexia, ADHD, or speech and language challenges, may require a different language mastery approach. Traditional rote learning methods often do not cater to these differences, making it harder for some students to keep up.

At MandarinStars, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed. Our Primary 6 Foundation Class is designed to help students build confidence, strengthen core skills, and develop effective exam techniques. Contact us to learn more about how we can help your child succeed.
