Addressing The Challenges Faced By Students

Students With Different Learning Needs

  • We create student-centred environments that allow students to learn effectively. Research finds that students immersed in student-centered classrooms are more engaged and achieve more than students in teacher-led classrooms with its one-size-fits-all approach.

Students With Learning Disorders

  • For students with hidden handicaps like poor working memory, dyslexia, attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), language processing difficulties or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), it is challenging to keep up with the pace in mainstream schools.

Students Low In Confidence

  • Such students would not find it helpful enrolling in mainstream tuition centres or Chinese enrichment programs, as these mostly cater to students with average to high ability.

Undifferentiated Approach to Teaching

  • While Singapore schools now group students by Chinese proficiency level from Primary 3 onwards, it may not be possible to cater to needs of individual students in classrooms with 30 to 40 students (and only one teacher).

Student-Centred Classrooms

Research have shown that engaging students in the learning process has numerous benefits that positively impact their academic performance, motivation, and overall development.

When they are given opportunities to actively participate, contribute their ideas, and succeed in their learning endeavors, they develop a sense of competence and belief in their own abilities. This confidence extends beyond the classroom and positively impacts their overall self-esteem and personal growth.

Lifelong Learning Skills

Engaging students in learning fosters the development of lifelong learning skills. They become self-directed learners.

Our Teaching Approach

Teaching Radicals and Chinese Orthography

Chinese characters often consist of radicals, which are smaller components with their own meanings. Teaching students about radicals and the structure of Chinese writing (orthography) can help them understand the structure and meaning of characters. We teach students the different types of radicals, highlight or color-code them, making it easier for students to identify and remember them.

Mnemonic Devices

We creatively create visual associations to help students remember characters.
For example, it is easier to remember the character 厕 if you associate a character with an image.

To learn the word 拳, students associate the character with  a picture and story 男生挥手打了我一拳.. We are delighted that our students find our exclusive MandarinStars teaching resources effective and fun.

Differentiated worksheets

We provide differentiated worksheets to match the different learning needs of the students. By providing step-by-step guidance and support, students can navigate through the task more independently and experience a greater sense of accomplishment. This can boost their self-confidence and motivation to take on more challenging tasks.

Individualized Support

Teachers can modify the level of support and complexity based on students’ readiness, ensuring that tasks are appropriately challenging and achievable. We modify the pace of the learning as the students gain mastery in their skills. This personalized approach promotes student engagement and progress.

Skill Development and Generalization

As students gain proficiency in smaller components, they can gradually generalize and apply their skills to more complex tasks. This progressive approach helps students develop independence, self-regulation, and problem-solving abilities.

Improved Self-Advocacy and Self-Determination

As they gain familiarity with the process of breaking tasks down, they can actively seek support and communicate their needs effectively. This empowers students to take ownership of their learning and become more self-directed in their academic pursuits.
